On April 3, 2017 INESC TEC have promoted a focus group session to study the usage of assistive learning technologies for STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics – subject learning.
The session brought together 14 specialists, including people with special needs, assistive technologies facilitators and researchers, teachers and BEACONING project researchers.
The results of this study will contribute to enhance the BEACONING accessibility.

Vitamin Teachers’ Portal hosts online webinars regularly. Having the first screenshots of BEACONING meta-game and interface, SEBIT held a webinar for Turkish teachers to make them familiar with the project. Nearly 200 teachers followed the webinar and 900 watched the recording later. We hope to recruit some of them for the large-scale pilot.

SEBIT organizes regular training sessions for the head teachers of the Ministry of National Education. Earlier this year one session was devoted to BEACONING and the authoring of play-lesson plans. It is not an easy design to merge gaming with learning, to blend studying with fun. Head teachers are master instructional designers who can help BEACONING with that task, once the authoring tool is available.

The BEACONING Accessibility Workshop was held at the INESC TEC pole of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) on May 23, 2017. About 15 researchers representing the consortium partners involved in the development of the user interface and mini-games participated in the workshop organized by INESC TEC’s Center for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG). The event was also broadcast online through the Collibri Collaborative Multimedia Environment (https://webconf-colibri.fccn.pt/) for partners who have not had the opportunity to attend in the event.

Yesterday afternoon, we met with early adopters teachers in Thiais (Academia of Creteil) to showcase the Beaconing Tools and focusing in particular on the Maths Basic Algebraic Skills Missions implemented in the Beaconing Platform.
The presentation to teachers in a round table was focusing on the showcasing of the available tools that can be found here: http://beaconing.paris.ort.asso.fr/ that presents the students perspectives as well as the Teachers and Learning Designers perspectives.
