BEACONING @Maya

Fractions have always been a hard Math topic for middle school students. On the other hand, fractions apply real life situation often. When designing at scale or when dealing with proportions of any kind, fractions are always needed. Motivated by the value of this Math topic in real life, BEACONING partners developed a gamified lesson plan where students would design a pool for a celebrity, no other than Taylor Swift. The lesson plan was designed based on evidence of competency that we hoped to see as outcomes. 2 hours flew by and the result was one happy Maths teacher!

Beaconing Gathers Momentum at Naidex 2017

Naidex 2017 gave Hands Free Computing a great platform to discuss Beaconing and it’s impact on target impaired users aged 16-24. We were able to spread the word not only among individuals with accessibility issues but also to those professionals directly involved in the educational sector, assistive technology and adaptation sector and industry sectors. Showcasing the benefits of Beaconing as an educational platform but also for the individual components housed within it relating to greater accessibility in technology and online presence.

Partners attend Accessibility Workshop at UTAD

Partners attended the Accessibility Workshop at the UTAD campus in Vila Real on the 23rd May 2017. Hosted by Hugo Paredes, this was an exceptional insight into how websites and mini games can be made accessible according to WCAG guidelines and gaming accessibility guidelines. Practical sessions were held where examples of poorly accessible websites were shown and how these can be corrected in the code associated with them. Mini Games were also broken down to see how these can be coded to be accessible and implemented going forward in the design.

Hands Free Computing promote Beaconing at The Assistive Technology Exhibition & Conference

Hands-Free Computing exhibited at the ATEC Conference on June 6th to showcase the Beaconing Platform and their involvement in the implementation of accessibility. It was a great opportunity to meet with educational and workplace professionals who teach STEM subjects to our targeted age range and gauge the level of interest for the project. Furthermore, we were able to discuss our strategy with like-minded individuals and gain valuable insights into how we can improve the gaming accessibility options already provided for Beaconing.
