First BEACONING Geolocation Game-based Learning Small Pilot in Turkey

72 METU School 7th graders have played together, learned together with BEACONING. As the physical and digital boundaries blur, gaming and learning as well blend to provide an immersive educational experience. As part of an EU-wide effort to run a geolocalized game-based learning activity across a dozen cities in Europe, METU School in Ankara was a voluntary partner in running the game in Turkish. Prior to the event a fly poster was hanged around the school for four consecutive weeks, building up a huge interest. Kids were to help special agents to unravel the stashes of toxic products that a toy business tycoon has hidden. As the SEBIT BEACONING team, we had no choice but to live up to the expectations.

Master Thesis Award and Presentation at eMadrid session

Cristina Alonso (UCM) received on the VIII eMadrid session the award for Best Master Thesis. During the first day of the journeys, held on Carlos III University in Madrid, Spain, she received the award and presented the work done in her Master Thesis, as part of the BEACONING project. Round table “La educación que nos espera” at eMadrid session

Baltasar Fernández-Manjón (UCM) participated on the VIII eMadrid session, whose topic was “Cyberlearning” held on the Carlos III University in Madrid, Spain during the days 2nd and 3rd of July 2018. Baltasar presented as part of the round table about “La educación que nos espera” (the education that awaits us) as representative of UCM, together with representatives from the other Universities that participate in the eMadrid network about e-learning. Baltasar presented the work done on UCM regarding serious games and learning analytics in several projects, including BEACONING.

Gymkhana of the 13 martyrs of Santa Eulàlia in Barcelona

On the occasion of the Santa Eulàlia festivities in Barcelona, Geomotion Games in collaboration with Urban Explorer ​​we created a location-based activity using the brand new Context Aware Challenges Authoring Tool from BEACONING. This year again Urban Explorer and Geomotion Games propose to celebrate the festivities of Santa Eulàlia, co-patron of Barcelona, ​​touring the places that, according to legend, witnessed one of the most cruel and bloodthirsty stories of all time. True to her Christian beliefs, a young geese keeper from the outskirts of Barcino (Barcelona), only 13 years old, put the Roman emperor in check by denying his divinity. Her actions had disastrous consequences, as she was punished with 13 tortures until, finally, she was crucified on the coldest day of the year.
